How to Get Rid of Gnats in Your Spokane Valley Home

Spokane Valley Woman Swatting at GnatsIt’s a major annoyance when you find out that your Spokane Valley rental house is having a gnat problem. Although gnats don’t bite or carry diseases, they shouldn’t be around in a clean home. These pests are attracted to ripe fruit, trash bags, and even potting soil. They seem to pop out from nowhere and can be difficult to remove. Unless of course, you know some tricks to keep these gnats away from your house for good.

Apple Cider Vinegar: One of the best ways to eliminate gnats without harsh chemicals is to use a mixture of apple cider vinegar, water, sugar, and dish soap. The one-two punch combo of sugar and soap works by attracting and trapping the gnats. You can place a small bowl of this mixture in areas where gnats are congregating.

Fly Paper: The flypaper is an effective and low-cost way of getting rid of gnats. Although perhaps not the most attractive option, those sticky flypaper ribbons are great at trapping buzzing insects around your home.

Bleach the Drains: If you find a lot of gnats around the sink drains, chances are you have drain flies. A good way to rid your drains and house of these pests is to pour a mixture of bleach and water into your drains. In just a little while, savor the satisfaction of having a sink that is gnat-free once again.

Rotten Fruit: Ripe fruits that are present in your house is an invitation to gnats. Having this knowledge about gnats, we can actually use this to our advantage. Place a piece of ripe or rotten fruit in a bowl and cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Using a toothpick, poke a few small holes in the plastic. The flies then get inside the bowl using these small holes and are trapped. Once full, you can then remove the bowl from the house.

Wine Trap: If you have some expired wine handy, you can use it to trap pesky gnats the same way. Using a small bowl, mix the wine and dish soap and leave it near the gnats. The gnats are attracted to the scent and are then trapped in the wine solution.

Bug Zapper: A more aggressive way of getting rid of gnats is by using a bug zapper device. There are many kinds of bug zappers available but most use electricity to zap flies, mosquitoes, and other flying insects. Find an out-of-the-way spot and plug the zapper there.

Chemical Spray: For the gnat problems that are seriously out of control, you’ll have to resort to using an insecticide in order to get rid of the gnats. Both foggers and sprays remove gnats easily but should be handled with care. Always follow the manufacturer’s directions when using chemical insecticides.

With various ways of removing gnats, you will definitely find one that works best for your pest problem. Are you interested in learning more about how to keep your rental house pest-free?
